Who has the keys?

Stripe: keep the keys with the business

Payouts go to the bank account on the Stripe account, and only its owner can change who owns it.

Every step below is from Stripe’s own help pages, checked on 6th October 2026. Screens change: if a step doesn’t match what you see, the linked page is the one to trust. Nothing here needs you to share a password.

Add a second admin

In your register this is field N.4 of the Stripe account.

  1. In the Stripe Dashboard, open Team settings and select Add member.
  2. Enter their email address and choose the Administrator role.

Administrators can do almost everything except delete the default bank account or change the owner.

Turn on two-step authentication

In your register this is field N.6 of the Stripe account.

  1. Go to Personal details, find Two-step authentication and select Add authentication method.
  2. Follow the prompts and keep the backup code safe.
  3. To require it for the whole team, use Team settings.

Stripe advises using more than one method, and stronger ones than SMS.

Make the business owner the account owner

In your register this is field N.3 of the Stripe account.

  1. In Team settings, open the overflow menu next to the person.
  2. Make sure their role is Super Administrator or Administrator; change it to Super Administrator if needed.
  3. Open the overflow menu again, select Transfer ownership and follow the steps.

If the owner can’t be reached, Stripe Support can transfer ownership after checking identity and the link to the business.
