Who has the keys?

Shopify: keep the keys with the business

A Shopify store has one owner, and only the owner can transfer it. If the person who set it up still owns it, the business’s sales depend on them.

Every step below is from Shopify’s own help pages, checked on 6th October 2026. Screens change: if a step doesn’t match what you see, the linked page is the one to trust. Nothing here needs you to share a password.

Add a second admin

In your register this is field N.4 of the Shopify account.

  1. In the Shopify admin, go to Settings, Users, and select Add users.
  2. Keep Admin user selected, enter their email address and select Add.
  3. Under Roles, assign the role they need, check the permission summary, then Save.

The invitation link expires after 7 days.

Require two-step sign-in

In your register this is field N.6 of the Shopify account.

  1. Go to Settings, Users, and open the user.
  2. In Secure sign-in method, choose to require it, then select Save.

Two-step authentication belongs to each person’s Shopify ID; you can require it but not see their methods.

Make the business the owner

In your register this is field N.3 of the Shopify account.

  1. If the new owner is already a user: Settings, Users, select the current owner, then View stores next to Store owner, choose the store and Change ownership.
  2. If not: Settings, General, then Manage under Transfer store, and choose to transfer to a new owner outside your business.
  3. Enter the new owner’s email. They accept from the email.

Only the store owner can change or transfer ownership.
