Who has the keys?

IONOS: keep the keys with the business

IONOS often holds a small business’s domain, website and email together. The person on the customer account controls all three.

Every step below is from IONOS’s own help pages, checked on 6th October 2026. Screens change: if a step doesn’t match what you see, the linked page is the one to trust. Nothing here needs you to share a password.

Turn on two-factor authentication

In your register this is field N.6 of the IONOS account.

  1. Sign in and go to Menu, My account, then Login & account security.
  2. Select Configure two-factor authentication, then Set up with authenticator app.
  3. Scan the QR code, enter the 6-digit code, and keep the recovery code it shows.

Move the domain into the business’s own account

In your register this is field N.3 of the IONOS account.

  1. In the current account, turn off the domain transfer lock and get the domain’s authorisation code.
  2. In the business’s IONOS account, go to Domains & SSL, Add Domain, choose a contract and enter the domain.
  3. Select Transfer it to IONOS Now, enter the authorisation code and complete the order.
  4. The current owner approves the request.

Website files, databases, email addresses and subdomains don’t move with the domain.
